Breaking up is always hard to do. No one likes it and it’s never going to be fun. But maybe, just maybe with this tune in your head it can be at least be bearable. A new track from an upcoming album from Jr. Thomas & The Volcano Soundstorm is available to stream on SoundCloud (embedded below for your listening pleasure). The track is a rocksteady tune that features Chiquis Lozoya (Expanders/ Boogaloo Assassins) and Alex Desert (Hepcat) on background vocals.
The TrojansThe Trojans are Buena Vista Social Club of UK Ska!
The Trojans are one of those bands that truly defy genre classification. They play Ska for sure and are known to helping launch the late 80’s/ early 90’s UK Ska explosion that saw bands such as Judge Dread, The Hot Knives, Potato 5, The Loafers, The Skadows take over the usic scene at that time.
The sound system is of course the only way to truly experience the music of Jamaica. Ever since the 50’s sound men of all kinds have built their massive and not so massive speaker boxes, search for or record their own tunes and set up in lawns to entertain the crowds with the latest musical nuggets. That’s the way it has always been and would take over the UK scene as well. Great men such as Tom “The Great” Sabastian, Prince Buster, King Tubby, Duke Reid the Trojan, Coxsone and others built their own sounds.
The London Intl Ska Festival returns to the capital this Easter (17-20 April 2014) with 50 acts from around the world across 15 bespoke events at famed and iconic London venues. Headline acts include Horace Andy, Derrick Morgan, Keith & Tex, Ken Parker, Mad Professor, Dennis Bovell, Jazz Jamaica and King Prawn, whilst venues include the lawns of the Victoria & Albert Museum, Prince Charles cinema in Leicester Sq (screening Madness’ 1981 Take It or Leave It film), The Dixie Queen Thames cruise, and Camden Town’s Jazz Cafe, Dingwalls, Barfly, The Forge and Electric Ballroom.
The Expanders are a true treat to listen to. The sound they make harkens back to a purer reggae when three part harmonies dominated the charts and if you haven’t heard them or seen them then you are missing out. The band was formed in 2003 and immediately started crafting soulful harmonies like their greatest heroes such as The Ethiopians, The Mighty Diamonds and The Gladiators.
