There are times when you just wish you could hop on a plane and flyer to somewhere else. This time that somewhere else would be NYC on Oct 1 for a very special long time in the making first time event. Congrats to everyone involved and I hope the event goes over as well as everyone things and hopes it does. This is such an outstanding party!
Dig Deeper is honored to present two legends of Jamaican soul, ska, and rocksteady – Stranger Cole and Patsy – who will appear for the first time together in NYC for one night only, backed by local supergroup Crazy Baldhead.
Stranger Cole’s biography reads like a history lesson of Jamaican music – active since the early 1960s, Stranger has recorded countless iconic ska, rocksteady, and reggae records with producers like Clement “Coxsone” Dodd, Prince Buster, Lee “Scratch” Perry, and Sonia Pottinger, and he continues to record actively through to the present day. Records like “Artibella” (a duet with Ken Boothe), “Rough and Tough”, and “We shall overcome” have become absolute classics of the genres, instantly recognizable for Stranger’s soulful, electric delivery.
Patsy “Millicent” Todd recorded a staggering quantity of material in her brief career from the early 1960s to her retirement from music in the early 1970s both solo and duetting with the likes of Derrick Morgan, Prince Buster, Eric “Monty” Morris, Bobby Aitken, and of course, numerous records cut with Stranger Cole. Their soulful duets span a range of emotions from the innocent early ska of “When you call my name”, the easygoing joy of “Tonight”, the heartbreaking “Your photograph” – and the timeless, exuberant “Down the train line”.
Since her retirement from music, Patsy rarely performs live, and has never before appeared in concert in NYC. Although Stranger tours often, it has been over a decade since he performed in town. This show itself took nearly 4 years to put together – for us, October 1 can’t come soon enough for this once in a lifetime night of Jamaican soul. We look forward to seeing you there.
