Rougher Yet Jamaican Hit Parade Samples are Killer!

JA Hit ParadeThere are some sites you visit just a few times and others that you just can’t live without. Rougher Yet is one of those site. I’ve already extolled the virtues of this site in a previous post. The site hosts sound samples of some of the top Reggae labels readers of this site will surely love including Amalgamated, Blue Cat, Doctor Bird, Pressure Beat, Treasure Isle and Wail N Soul M. It’s easy to navigate and each sound sample comes with a picture of the label. What a treat! Well since January he has been posting scans and samples of the weekly Gleaner Top Ten Jamaican Hit Parade starting from 1967.

It’s an interesting mix of homegrown Ska, Rocksteady and imported Soul hits of the day. For instance the chart for the second week of 1967 included the following cuts (see below). Head over to the website for more charts and hours of endless listening pleasure.

1. Hopeton Lewis – Take It Easy

2. Alton Ellis – I’ve Got A Date

3. Desmond Dekker – 007

4. Hopeton Lewis – Sounds And Pressure

5. The Wailers – Bend Down Low

6. The Clarendonians – Shu Be Do Be

7. Stranger And Patsy – Give Me The Right

8. Lou Rawls – Love Is A Hurting Thing

9. Derrick Harriott – My Last Letter

10. The Clarendonians – Rudie Bam Bam

I've been involved in the Los Angeles music scene since at least 1995 going to shows, promoting, spinning records and running labels. Ska and Early Reggae are my passion among other things of course.
