Rocksteady Chris Back w/ Bubble Up And All Is Right In Silverlake.

Bubble UpFour years ago a cat named Chris started spinning at a little club called Akbar in Silverlake, CA. His buddy Terry Lee ran the door and helped spread the word about the new night. It was called The Rocksteady Lounge. It wasn’t a big spot but was perfect for what he was spinning. Vintage Ska, Reggae and Rocksteady on a Monday night.

No one thought much of it. We started going though and having a great time. That lead us to come back the next week of course and the week after. Chris would invite friends to spin with him from time to time – David Orlando (Dub Club/ Punky Reggae Party), Jim Bigger Boss, Nina Reggaedelic Cole, me on occasion and other special guests. Just some friends hanging out listening to wicked cool tunes. A regular bunch of true reggae fans getting together and really listening to the music.

Well a few years later and the club was still going but Rock Steady Chris as he came to be known was getting busy with school and such. He wasn’t able to devote as much time to the night as he wanted so he enlisted the spectacular duo of Nina Reggaedelic Cole & Viktor Manzo to carry the torch forward. Do that they have and more keeping the regular Monday night party lively and fun.

Well as fate would have it, and we all knew deep down (who can ever stop spinning music that we love), the regular vinyl excursions from his extensive collection kept calling out to him. So what to do? It seems that the Little Temple just down the street from his old haunt was looking for someone to take over the regular Sunday night promotion. Sunday’s were held down for a long time by another reggae club leaning more towards the Latin side of the music. Sonido was winding down and they needed something new yet similar in style to what had been a steady night. Fate was calling! So Chris returns to the tables on a regular basis with Bubble Up. And all was right in Silverlake.

BUBBLE UP: A weekly celebration of Jamaican music with resident DJ Rock Steady Chris and special guests, playing Reggae, Ska, Rocksteady, Roots, Dub, Lovers, Dancehall and Digital. By the way…we don’t generally have MCs or guests on the mic, and we do not book live bands, sorry…just TOONZ for days, played sweet for your dancing feet.
