Pressure Sounds Does Absolutely Rocksteady

As Steve of Duff Guide notes over at his blog “Pressure Sounds continues to drop some of the highest-quality reggae re-issues imaginable.” I could not agree more. Their catalog of material is unsurpassed in top quality and amazing dedication to presenting the material in the best possible way. The care they give the releases is astounding.

Absolutely Rocksteady, a new collection of cuts The Uniques recorded with producer Bunny “Striker” Lee in ’67-’68 is no different and another must have release. Originally formed out of The Techniques, this version of The Uniques features the legendary Slim Smith (one of the most popular and beloved singers of the Rocksteady era), Lloyd Charmers and Jimmy Riley.

The Uniques established themselves as Jamaica’s number one vocal group with classic hits like ‘Do Rock Steady’…‘Let Me Go Girl’… and ‘My Conversation’. Makes me shiver how good they were.

The group recorded a string of hits (many of which are included on Absolutely Rocksteady), but disbanded in 1969. Steve notes that “Smith died in 1973 in what appeared to be a freak accident–one night after a party he found himself locked out of his parents’ house, so he broke a window to gain entry, but ended up cutting himself so severely on the glass that he bled out before he could be treated–though some have conjectured that he was depressed and let himself bleed to death.”

Absolutely Rocksteady is available on CD and LP through Ernie B’s Reggae in the US. You can preview tracks at the website and EB Reggae is always good for a listen as well.

I've been involved in the Los Angeles music scene since at least 1995 going to shows, promoting, spinning records and running labels. Ska and Early Reggae are my passion among other things of course.
