VP Records’ subsidiary 17 North Parade specializing in mainly the Randy’s catalog stuff re-issued the first ever live album recorded in Jamaica ‘Live at the Turntable Club‘. It was originally recorded in ’74 and issued on Trojan Records in ’75. This is the first CD issue of this long out of print album and while the cover leaves something to be desired – seems like a very generic 80′s hits mix – the music contained on it is nothing but top notch productions.
The Turntable Club was a hot happenin’ place in Kingston of the 70’s. It was opened in the summer of 1973 by sound system owner Winston ‘Merritone’ Blake on Red Hills Road in Kingston. The club didn’t take long to become a mecca for all sorts of artists and fans to congregate together to appreciate the music coming from inside. So it was in 1974 that producer Winston “Niney” Holness thought it a perfect setting for a new kind of recording. A live one! The result was the collection of tunes presented on the album.
The album features 3 of the best artists Jamaica has ever produced at the top of their power in the 17-year-old singing sensation Dennis Brown, along with Delroy Wilson, Big Youth plus instrumentalist Alexander Portious. The backing band for the evening was the incomparable Soul Syndicate Band. It was all engineered by King Tubby, Errol Thompson & Dennis Thompson at King Tubby’s famous Dromilly Avenue studio. It was then mastered in London at The Beatles’ Apple Studio on Saville Row.
Delroy Wilson and Big Youth both are featured with some of their hits songs including “You Keep On Running” and “Dread In A Babylon” respectively while while Dennis Brown performs the well-known “Cassandra” along with the lesser-known “Rock With Me Baby” and “Give a Helping Hand”.
The new CD re-issue has been remastered for supreme audio fidelity. The packaging replicates the original gate-fold vinyl sleeve and is complimented with an extensive booklet including an interview with Turntable club owner Winston “Merritone” Blake. VP Records says a vinyl LP re-issue will follow in 2012.
