Jr. Thomas Volcano Sessions on the Horizon

Jr. ThomasBreaking up is always hard to do. No one likes it and it’s never going to be fun. But maybe, just maybe with this tune in your head it can be at least be bearable. A new track from an upcoming album from Jr. Thomas & The Volcano Soundstorm is available to stream on SoundCloud (embedded below for your listening pleasure).

The track is a rocksteady tune that features Chiquis Lozoya (Expanders/ Boogaloo Assassins) and Alex Desert (Hepcat) on background vocals.

So who is Jr. Thomas? and who or what is the Volcano SoundStorm? Well Jr. Thomas is actually Thomas McDowall, who lives in Minneapolis, MN, and has been touring for many years with The Dropsteppers and The Void Union among others. He’s already released an album of material on Megalith Records here in the US and Rocking Records in Germany.

The Volcano Soundstorm is an all-star collective of LA-based musicians including cats from Thee Hurricanes, The Expanders, Western Standard Time and Hepcat. It’s basically the studio musicians available at the time when an artist needs or wants to record in one of the best equipped studio’s in town where Brian Dixon is the chief engineer called Volcano Lounge in Sherman Oaks CA.

Volcano SoundThe band line-up for the full album includes:

Jr. Thomas (Void Union) – vocals
Brian Dixon (Rhythm Doctors/Aggrolites) – guitar/engineer
Zac Pike (Jimmy Cliff) – Guitar
Dan Boer (Jimmy Cliff) – Organ/ Piano
Scott Abels (Hepcat/ Jimmy Cliff) – Drums/ Percussion
Chiquis Lozoya (Expanders/ Boogaloo Assassins) – Bass/ Background Vocals
Brian Wallace (See Spot/ Western Standard Time) – Sax
Tom Cook (Debonaires) – Trombone
John Butcher (Expanders) – Background Vocals
Alex Desert (Hepcat/ The Lions) – Background Vocals

What a band right? I don’t think it gets much better than that! They’ve already recorded 13 original tunes, a cover, 3 organ instrumental versions and one dub courtesy of King Terror other wise known as Brian Dixon. The album will be coming out by the end of the year hopefully but it’s still up in the air as to whom will release it. When I find out I’ll be sure to let you know. WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE TUNE?

I've been involved in the Los Angeles music scene since at least 1995 going to shows, promoting, spinning records and running labels. Ska and Early Reggae are my passion among other things of course.
