David Hillyard & The Rocksteady 7 Hit Nor Cal
I like the Rocksteady 7 stuff. I think it is something that no one else is doing. It’s raw and dirty and evokes feelings of lost 60’s Skatalites improvisations. It’s rare that Dave gets to do much which this troupe since he’s always on tour with the Slackers. So when he does get a chance to stretch out and blow his horn it’s a welcome adventure. Featuring the legendary Larry McDonald and an all-star collection of players this is a rare and indeed welcome aural experience for those that get the chance to hear it. Too bad we’re gonna miss it this time around here in Southern California.
Here’s the tour coming up fast:
March 31 – santa cruz – crepe place
April 1- san jose – blank club
April 2 – san francisco – amante (11 p.m.)
April 3 – san francisco – benders (matinee, 2 p.m.)

April 5 – portland – rotture

If you haven’t read his rant on the state and history of U.S. Ska – do that now. The first installment was posted back in January by me on Musical Occupation. The second will be posted tomorrow here. Read that HERE.
