There’s a new event about to take off from Chinatown in a couple of weeks. Intensified! Rockin’ The Steady Beat brings the traditional ska and reggae back to Chinatown (anyone remember Hong Kong Cafe?).

Steadybeat Recordings was the top of the pops back in the 90’s LA traditional scene and the man at the controls, King Steadybeat, has slowly been getting back into the action here and there.

This may well be a proper return to form for the man who brought us the likes of the first Hepcat, Ocean 11, See Spot and more back in the day of the OG Hong Kong Cafe sets and The Intensified Fest.

Boom Shacka Lacka Lynn Tait Special

“Boom Shacka Lacka” is a classic track and massive hit for Hopeton Lewis of course and one of my personal favorites. The flip side of the Duke Reid UK (DR 2505) release is a sweet instrumental version “Dynamite” credite to Tommy McCook. It’s also a monthly dance party in London’s Soho! Their next event is Friday February 12th so if you’re in the area check it out.

They will be doing a Lynn Tait special for the next event. They recently included a reprint of a piece on Mr. Tait from The Beat Magazine (RIP) on their blog. Here is but a small part of that article which you can read in depth at the blog.

When one considers the biography of an artist, certain predictable patterns usually develop. This is not the case when one regards the career of Lynn Taitt. Taitt’s name became synonymous with rock-steady in the 1960s, yet he is not a Jamaican. His guitar sound became one of the most recognizable sounds in Jamaica in the 1960s, yet guitar was not the first instrument he mastered.

Equally interesting is how at the height of his popularity in Jamaica, Tait opted to permanently move to Canada. All of these aspects of his career prompt more questions than answers. What is certain is that the man, whose stellar guitar work graced countless hits by such singers as Desmond Dekker, the Melodians, Derrick Morgan, Alton Ellis, Delroy Wilson, Ken Boothe, as well as numerous others, was a major figure in the development of Jamaican music.

Trojan Lounge August Edition

It’s another Trojan Lounge session with Special Guest Danny Holloway of Island Records and Dub Lab fame. He’s produced some very amazing records in his long career and has most recently been working with The Lions.

Also on the bill is Bigger Boss with his outstanding cuts of skinhead reggae – not to be missed as well is our lady in session Busty Brown. Marv Mack the man behind all the fun will also drop some of his classic cuts. See you in a couple of weeks!

The Ram Jam Club Birthday Bash is Saturday

This weekend is version 6 of The Ram Jam Club, a monthly boss sounds excursion from JA to UK, with me, 2 Tone Ted, Nina Reggaedelic, Viktor & Bigger Boss dropping the vinyl platters that matter like no other.

These selectors have been collecting and spinning records for many years all around the Los Angeles area and around the world in some cases.

2 Tone Ted, while not playing any 2 Tone Ska, goes back to the amazing Hong Kong Cafe days (ask someone older then you if you have no idea what I am talking about) that really begat the golden age of Los Angeles Ska with Hepcat, Ocean 11, See Spot, Joey Altruda and the Steadybeat sound (once again – ask someone if you have no idea) coming up.

Nina Reggadelic is a avid collector of vintage reggae sounds (almost second to none) who has begun posting interesting stories and sound clips to her blog at www.reggaedelic.com. Her wonderful demeanor belies a wicked flick of the wrist on the tables.

Bigger Boss, a regular guest and a true part of the family, has scoured the globe for the tastiest skinhead cuts that will get even the meanest cuss on the floor to stomp his/ her boots.

I go almost as far back as Ted there and have spun records for many different clubs and bands.

It’s also a VERY SPECIAL event as it’s Ted’s birthday that night! Guess what – that’s not all – our friend Bubba (The Pedeltones) is also celebrating that day so it’s going to be a full club as we dance the night away.

Be in Santa Monica Saturday night at 9pm ready to dance to the sweetest sounds of ska and reggae.

Return of the Rub-A-Dub Style!

We’ve mentioned the wonderful pleasure we have of living in Los Angeles, home to such a great musical landscape and tons of Jamaican influneced bands and sound system dances such as The Dub Club and Punky Reggae Party. Well there’s a new documentary about what makes the dancehall and sound system culture what it is today.

Produced by Tom Chasteen and featuring performances of various original foundation DJs taking the mic live and direct backed by The Echodelic Sound System from the various shows that have been put on in recent years, the exciting new documentary film, “Return of the Rub-a-Dub Style” directed by Steve Hanft, gets another screening.

The 60 minute film screens next Wednesday July 15th 2009 at 9pm as part of the weekly Dub Club experience at the Echo and comes out on dvd in August. Get there before 9:30 and it’s FREE! Trinity & Tippa Lee will perform later in the night.
