The Dub Club presents WILLI WILLIAMS backed by The Expanders with special guests David Hillyard of the Slackers on Sax reggae legend Larry McDonald on percussion Mr T-Bone (from Italy) on Trombone plus Jah Faith. Willi Williams is best known as the writer and singer of “Armagideon Time,” a beloved reggae anthem once popularized by The Clash, but over his 40-plus year career, he has contributed consistently to the greater body of Jamaican reggae, collaborating with many of the music’s luminary figures.

Willi Williams will be backed up by the outstanding local roots band The Expanders , who are known for their devotion to capturing the vintage sound and feel of classic reggae. They will be joined by an all star cast including David Hillyard (The Slackers), Mr T-Bone (top reggae trombone player from Italy and Larry McDonald (legendary reggae percussionist having played on too many classic albums to count).

Forty-two years after his entry into the musical arena, reggae pioneer Max Romeo, is ready to hang up the gloves. In a recent interview with the Observer, the singer indicated that he is in the closing stage of a rich and colourful musical career.

Millie Small may only be truly known as a one hit wonder for the ska song heard round the world “My Boy Lollipop” but as mentioned in previous posts she was WAY more then that.

She was a leader and trailblazer for JA women and women in general as singers and songwriters. After her major hit she went on to record for various labels including Fontana, Island, Decca and Trojan from 1963 to 1970, when she decided to leave music behind. There were many stand out tracks that have not really seen the light of day since they were issued.

Well thanks to Island and Trojan Records a plan has been launched to correct that oversight and give some well needed rounding to this wonderful songstress and performer.

Joe Higgs, who died in 1999, will be honored along with performer/producer Winston Riley; Keith Lyn, former singer with Byron Lee and the Dragonaires; musician/artiste Charles ‘Charlie Organaire’ Cameron and others.

Winston Riley will be of note as well to fans of this blog as a member of The Techniques and mastermind behind many boss hits including the true classic “Double Barrel” and the Techniques label.

Dynamic Pressure is one of [...]]]> In the interest of highlighting modern acts that were little known outside of certain circles, that issued only a few tracks or 1 “45″ but were outstanding to see live and ahead of the curve, we kick off a new feature to help spread the word about these “Lost Gems”.

Dynamic Pressure is one of those bands. They were a little known CA act that released just one 45 and a few compilation sides. They made a lasting impression on many people I suspect though. Ask Brian “Boom Boom” Dixon of the Aggrolites what Dynamic Pressure means to him and he’ll probably say “one of the best bands ever” or something to that effect.

They were surely ahead of the curve since they could probably be referred to as the band to first play that “dirty” or skinhead style reggae sound in California that begat the Rhythm Doctors (who will probably get a mention here soon too) and The Aggrolites.

The Hippy Boys [...]]]> Since we discussed “Spaghetti Western” inspired reggae Friday thanks to Nina’s wonderful blog we’re going to continue that topic again.

“Death Rides A Horse” by The Hippy Boys, named after the movie of the same name, was issued in 1970 on Pama’s Unity label. Its the B-side to Max Romeo’s “Melting Pot”.

The Hippy Boys are sure to be familiar to regular readers of this blog and true collectors for not only their classic lineup but superb cuts. The band, formed by Lord Charmers and a stand-in for The Upsetters when Lee Perry toured the Britain for the first time, included guitarist Alva “Reggie” Lewis, organist Glen Adams (who most recently has been playing around NYC with The Slackers) and brothers Aston ‘Family Man’ Barrett on bass guitar and Carlton Barrett drums respectively (who later went on to much bigger fame playing with Bob Marley of course).

There are in fact 2 other very different versions of “Death Rides A Horse” that were issued on Crab & Amalgamated too! They were both included on Trojan’s Big Gundown release from a few years ago.
