Since I drove down from LA, I arrived approximately 15 minutes before The Bullets took the stage.

I was pleasantly surprised by the friendly, welcoming atmosphere at Hensley’s. The walls were adorned with Ska/Reggae/Punk inspired banners and art. Photographs of Iggy Pop, Tom Waits and Bob Marley were on display around the bar. The drinks were cheap. The food was tasty and inexpensive. I later found out that the place was run and owned by Matt Hensley (Skater/ Flogging Molly).

The venue was broken down into two main rooms (bar area and stage/dance floor). Aside from the stage/dance floor area being a tad too stuffy, I really had no complaints.

The Bullets came out and did their thing. Malik wowed the crowd with his tender, soul-infused vocals while Roger and the band kept the crowd moving with their thumping, organ-drenched grooves. Just when you’ve pegged The Bullets as solely a Reggae/Soul band, they break out with the Chicano classic, “Viva Tirado”, and the band’s unique, diverse sound comes to light. The Bullets end the show with, “Tell It Like It Is”, and the crowd goes wild. Aaron Neville has some mighty big shoes to fill, but Malik filled them in just fine.

We’ve also cooked up a special surprise to go along with the already announced all-star band playing that night: The Aggrolites’ Roger Rivas side project LOS BULLETS new CD drops next week with a show at the world famous Troubadour on Tuesday night. Roger has agreed to bring out some copies of the new album Sunday night for a really awesome listening party. You might even be able to score a copy of the new album if you get there early enough!
