It’s a Ghost Town these days in Los Angeles. Ska has left us and the music is dead. Or is it? The Bluebeat Lounge (held for six years at the Knitting Factory and hosted by Chris Murray) was a weekly live injection of much needed ska (no matter what “style” you liked there was enough variety to keep it fresh) in the Los Angeles scene. Those days are gone (only by a few years though) and there are few promising young bands these days to keep us interested. Sure there are the yearly Hepcat shows which never disappoint and I hear good things about The Bohunks, that isn’t enough.

Having said that it’s all the more reason to go see some of the greats and founders of bygone days when you get the chance. Maybe just maybe someone will see the spark that ignited a continent many years ago and also find that flame flicker inside of them and turn into a wild fire – only to then form a band that will once again carry the Ska to the new generation. All of that leads me to this: BAD MANNERS invades Los Angeles!

What can you say about Bad Manners? Ultimate party band? Endless energy and excitement? Ska till you drop fun? All of the above and more of course! Bad Manners long career in the music biz has had it’s ups and it’s downs. From 2 Tone to no tone, from emergence to resurgence.

The fact that Buster and company are still performing today is testament to the longevity of Ska as a viable music outlet. While The Specials are getting all the press these days with the “reunion” and all (which has been loads of fun and well worth catching) Buster keeps plugging away with his brand of knees up feel good dance party music.

While this post comes a little late since they have a show tonight at the horrible House of Blues on Sunset and most readers are away from their homes (but maybe not their laptops), there is still time to catch them live!

They also have a show Tuesday night with The Bohunks in Pomona.

I've been involved in the Los Angeles music scene since at least 1995 going to shows, promoting, spinning records and running labels. Ska and Early Reggae are my passion among other things of course.
